Local music man Travis McElroy of Thick Syrup records has some big news:  In October, Thick Syrup will release “Halloween Songs” by David and Jad Fair.  Right on!  Sounds like a great follow-up to the band’s Monster Songs for Children that came out in 1998 on the Kill Rock Stars label.

From Travis:

“I’m very proud to put something out by the guys who helped shaped what i listen to today.

Jad Fair is a founding member of Half Japanese. He has recorded with Yo La Tengo, Daniel Johnston, Kramer, Monster Party, Jason Willett, Lumberob, Richard Hell, Strobe Talbot, The Tinklers, Naofumi Ishimaru, Mosquito, The Pastels, Teenage Fanclub, Phonocomb, DQE, John Zorn, God Is My Co-Pilot, The Tall Dwarfs, Thurston Moore, Eye, Moe Tucker, Eugene Chadbourne, Fred Frith, Mara Flynn, Kevin Blechdom, Terry Adams, The Work Dogs, Tom Ardolino, The Shapir O’Rama, R. Stevie Moore, Bill Wells, Tom Recchion, Isobel Campbell, Norman Blake, Steve Fisk, and David Fair.

Kurt Cobain had Half Japanese open for Nirvana on the group’s 1993 tour.  The band’s history and influence are chronicled in the 1993 documentary Half Japanese: The Band That Would Be King.”

Congrats to Thick Syrup–this is a pretty damn good get!!

Every now and again, it’s time to dust off the last twenty years and get back into good ole fast, loud, three chords-y stripped-down rock.  Tonight is one of those nights!

Teenage Bottlerocket is a four-piece straight-ahead outfit, comin’ to you straight outta…Laramie, Wyoming?  You bet!  Last month, Spin magazine (yes, I know, but still) listed TB’s “Down in the Basement” as the Number 1 Song You Must Download.   I predict a fair amount of pogoing tonight.

No slouch in the opening act, either:  The Weisenheimers, off of local label Thick Syrup Records!  High energy, fun-lovin’, good times, and a perfect appetizer for Teenage Bottlerocket.

Time to channel your inner Ramones.  8:00, Vino’s, $7.

See you out?

QUESTION:  Do you own a black leather jacket and, if so, would you let me borrow it for a night?

It’s happened to more than one of us, right?  You get pulled over and get nailed for that court date you missed a while back?  Maybe an old traffic ticket (or five), maybe you pulled the ole “failed to appear” and accumulated the fines plus a live arrest warrant?  Ok, maybe it just happened to me….

OH, and it also happened to Matt Floyd, the kickass bassist for Smoke Up Johnny.  Due to what can only be called a Floydian slip, Matt’s sordid past caught up with him and he’s facing some serious fines that need to be paid before he can leave town with SUJ and The Moving Front’s two-week tour.

How can you help?  Come on out Monday night for Travis McElroy’s weekly Thick Syrup event.  The Bearded One is turning the Monday night fest into a benefit show for the man whose initials (not coincidentally) are MF.   Come on out and keep this bad MF outta jail and on the road where he belongs.

Not only will you be springing Matt from the joint, you’ll get to hear Kyoto Boom, The Weisenheimers, and The Chicklettes.  Word around the campfire is Pretty Boy Floyd himself may join The Chicklettes for a tune or two.  No word yet whether they’ll bust out with Jailbreak, Jailhouse Rock, or Folsom Prison Blues.

Stick it to the Man in the easiest way possible.   See y’all there.

Sibilance,

Glen

9 p.m. Sticky Fingerz, $4

Our friend and yours, Travis McElroy, trots out the latest installment of his Monday Thick Syrup night at Sticky Fingerz.  I’ll be there, you’ll be there, and guess who else will be there?  Yup, that’s right:  everybody else.

This is your last chance for a while to see Everybody’s Favorite Putumayo web guy on stage.  Pete Jones is headed back to NYC and his swan song will be performed tonight, with back up from members of The Moving Front and The Contingencies (performing as the Tiny Vibrations).   We’ll miss our friend and fellow Eco-Savants kickballer and look forward to (hopefully) his frequent returns to la petit roche.

As if seeing PJ off isn’t reason enough to get off your couch, you also get a chance to make up for missing The Reds show last week.  Come on out and taunt Graham Cobb into tossing off a few pre-show Il Libretina licks.

You still want to stay on the couch?  Still?  Ok, sheesh, try this:  MAGIC CROPDUSTERS!  David Jukes, Jeff Matika, and Matt Quin (complete with new ink), out from behind the bar at Vino’s and ready to make your outing worthwhile.  You don’t get to see the Cropdusters out too often–scratch up $4 and see three acts.  $1 Old Styles.  Hoo-ahh!!

UPDATE:  Magic Cropdusters have cancelled, and have been replaced with BROWNINGHAM.   Too bad about the Cropdusters, but Browningham is a one man tour de force.  This should make you get up and down to Stickyz even earlier.   I caught Browningham at the ACAC cover show on Hallowe’en, which featured him as Prince Rogers Nelson himself.  One man, one synth, one falsetto, much groovin’.

Sibilance,

Glen

If it’s Monday, it’s time for some Thick Syrup again.  Come on out tonight to Sticky Fingerz for Loch Ness Monster, San Antokyo, and The Weisenheimers.  It’s a 9 p.m. lo-do-show ($4).

Loch Ness Monster seems to give Sean Sulac (of Hector Faceplant) and Scottish Brian (who’s poured you many a pint at Vino’s) a chance to explore some heavier, darker riffs worthy of the fabled sea serpent, but Hector keeps managing to poke his head out of the sludgy stuff and say hello.

Betcha 5 Old Styles that San Antokyo brings it hard, fast, and maybe topless tonight.  Watch out for the Kerby boys (Kevin and Josh), Brian, and Bryce to show up with a fun, loose set, maybe written on Josh’s back.

I haven’t seen The Weisenheimers yet, but their MySpace tunes sound kind of power pop.  Maybe a flexed-out, sped-up Material Issue (and I mean that in a good way.)

Come on out tonight.  I haven’t seen you in a long time.

Sibilance,

Glen

damn-bullets.jpg

Tonight is the 2nd installment of Thick Syrup Records’ Monday night local music series at Sticky Fingerz.   The lineup:  Damn Bullets  , Justin Carr, & Ghost Co.  9:oo p.m., $4 cover.

This will be my first successful attempt to see Damn Bullets  put on their rockabilly/bluegrass/psychobilly jam band show, and I’m looking forward to it.  According to their peace-sign-adorned website, Damn Bullets is “a statement on non-violence.”  These guys have Conway roots (1 straight outta Hendrix, three from UCA), and have developed a strong following after some success in the Arkansas Times showcase last year.    Word around the campfire is that I should expect a foot-stomping good time from these guys.

Come on out–$4 cover charge leaves you enough for one of the dollar beer specials.  Try and beat that on a Monday night.

Sibilance,

Glen
