FAVORITE LOCAL MUSICIAN BESIDES YOURSELF (AND WHY): Right now I really like Memphis Pencils because they successfully blend a lot of stuff that I like and they are pretty down to earth fellas as far as I know.
WHAT’S IN YOUR POCKET RIGHT NOW? Nada, I like to keep ’em light.
YOUR FAVORITE VENUE IN LITTLE ROCK (AND WHY)? I like most of the venues in Little Rock. We have played White Water, Vino’s, Sticky Fingerz, and Juanita’s. No complaints here. I don’t love seeing shows at Vino’s, but it’s a good hang out. White Water is my favorite. It just feels right, and nowadays they are actually trying to get it to sound right. Its nice to play in clubs with big sound systems, because they might make you sound great, but at least at the WW, if you sound bad you can really only blame yourself.
TELL ME ABOUT THE FIRST “REAL” CONCERT YOU EVER ATTENDED. Cool & the Gang in 6th grade. It was bittersweet, because I didn’t get to sit next to the girl I was “going with”.
HOW ABOUT THE FIRST SHOW YOU EVER DID YOURSELF? I think it was a coffee shop called Java Strait in a strip mall in Fayetteville. It was a couple acoustic guitars jangling around on indie rock and surf rock sounding stuff. It was scary. It took years for me to get comfortable on stage, but I finally realized that no matter what you do, if you put yourself in front of people, some of them will like it and some wont. You can never stop those who don’t like it from talking shit. Somehow that realization was liberating for me, but I can’t seem to relate it to other people very well.
BEST SOURCE FOR MUSICAL INFO? (MAG, WEBSITE, ETC) Dunno, friends I guess.
WHAT DOES THIS TOWN NEED? Continued organization efforts. I’d say we’re doing pretty well all things considered. Fayetteville needs some help though.
YOUR THREE FAVORITE ALBUMS, ALL-TIME: John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, Canyon/Empty Rooms, Zombies/Odyssey & Oracle
RE YOUR MUSIC: DOES YOUR MOM LIKE IT OR NOT? Yeah.
FUNNIEST THING THAT’S EVER HAPPENED AT ONE OF YOUR SHOWS: We were playing at North 6th in Brooklyn. It’s a pretty big stage and there was a decent sized crowd. I launched into this big guitar solo intro without realizing that the drummer was lighting a cigarette or something, so I basically went from soloing at the front of the stage to slinking to the back of the stage hoping nobody would notice that no other instruments had started playing when I thought they were going to. Everybody accused me of having taken mushrooms before the show.
AS A KID, WHAT’D YOU WANT TO GROW UP TO BE? A soccer player. I don’t think I even knew professional soccer players existed.

FAVORITE LOCAL MUSICIAN BESIDES YOURSELF (AND WHY): sulac: he has a liz magnet in his pocket, i think it’s unfair really. Brian Herrill: guitar, jeez those are some pretty rock songs. YOUR FAVORITE VENUE IN LITTLE ROCK (AND WHY)? The sound is amazing at Downtown Music and The Whitewater Tavern, WWT wins b/c i don’t really like big stages. I want to be on the same level as everyone else.
TELL ME ABOUT THE FIRST “REAL” CONCERT YOU EVER ATTENDED. Blues Traveler, at The Blue Note in Little Rock. They had this huge under the club area where people could drink cause it was all ages upstairs. I thought, when i get older i’m gonna drink and drink and drink…
HOW ABOUT THE FIRST SHOW YOU EVER DID YOURSELF? Vino’s with Pomo Christi, we were so excited to be an “all grrl” band.
BEST SOURCE FOR MUSICAL INFO? (MAG, WEBSITE, ETC) my ears. if you think i’ll like something play it for me.
WHAT DOES THIS TOWN NEED? a high speed train so we can all go play in Austin on the weekends, a real record store, and a radio show that played a diverse selection of great music that was on during the day.
YOUR THREE FAVORITE ALBUMS, ALL-TIME: this is like asking which body part you like the best (i dig my hands the most). Today it is… Dengue Fever: Escape from Dragon House, Raymond Scott: Reckless Nights and Turkish Twilights and Tom Lehrer: Songs by Tom Lehrer
RE YOUR MUSIC: DOES YOUR MOM LIKE IT OR NOT? my mom LOVES it, although she’s busy and can’t be at all my shows.
FUNNIEST THING THAT’S EVER HAPPENED AT ONE OF YOUR SHOWS: while on tour with Hector Faceplant in Odessa, Texas, 2 professional wrestlers came in to the club (an empty cinder-block building, byob) and Jason Thompson asks one of them, “Hey! Can you pick me up like you are gonna pile drive me but don’t so I can get a picture?” Ask him for the photo, it’s pretty good!
AS A KID, WHAT’D YOU WANT TO GROW UP TO BE? independent
MUSICAL/LIFE ADVICE YOU’D GIVE TO MY 13 YEAR OLD GUITAR FIEND SON? you can make money playing music, but money won’t make you happy, music will.
CHECKONETWO MUSICIAN SURVEY: Brian Rodgers August 28, 2008
Posted by glenhooks in Musician Profiles.Tags: brian rodgers, don williams, kiss, lenny bryan, the clash, the jam, The Moving Front, the replacements, white water tavern
1 comment so far
NAME: Brian Rodgers
BAND(S) YOU ARE IN: The Moving Front
PLAY ANY INSTRUMENTS? DO TELL: guitar, bass, and piano equally bad
DESCRIBE YOUR MUSICAL STYLE: diverse
HOW’D YOU GET STARTED PLAYING MUSIC? Grew up with it in my family, but got more into when moving to LR in 1990 and meeting so many great musicians
FAVORITE LOCAL MUSICIAN BESIDES YOURSELF (AND WHY): Lenny Bryan – he pretty much sets the bar in LR in my mind.
WHAT’S IN YOUR POCKET RIGHT NOW? Blackberry
YOUR FAVORITE VENUE IN LITTLE ROCK (AND WHY)? White Water Tavern – just the chill, anything goes feel.
TELL ME ABOUT THE FIRST “REAL” CONCERT YOU EVER ATTENDED: I think Don Williams with my parents was first, but a trip to see KISS shortly after set the wheels in motion.
HOW ABOUT THE FIRST SHOW YOU EVER DID YOURSELF?: I’m sure it was horrible. Actually, we were smart enough to bring in the early 90’s LR guitar god Jerry Craven to cover up the rest of the bands downfalls.
BEST SOURCE FOR MUSICAL INFO? (MAG, WEBSITE, ETC): I kind of get it from everywhere. I play in a band with a couple of walking music encyclopedias so that helps.
WHAT DOES THIS TOWN NEED?: COLLEGE RADIO !!! and maybe a water slide.
YOUR THREE FAVORITE ALBUMS, ALL-TIME:
The Clash – London Calling
The Replacements – All for Nothing, Nothing for All (I know it’s a best of comp but hey you gotta get while you can when you only get 3 choices)
The Jam – The Sound of the Jam (another greatest hits album but I only get 3 choices)
Note: All of these answers will change tomorrow
RE YOUR MUSIC: DOES YOUR MOM LIKE IT OR NOT? nah
FUNNIEST THING THAT’S EVER HAPPENED AT ONE OF YOUR SHOWS: In Atlanta shortly after Jeremy tore his ACL, we had a show and he was on a cane which he swung kind of like a golf club during a song and it happened to hit a crush beer can as he swung it which then took off like a rocket and hit a girl in the face that was actually bringing us drinks to the stage. I guess that wasn’t that funny now that I think about it.
AS A KID, WHAT’D YOU WANT TO GROW UP TO BE?: Either a pro skateboarder or a rock star
MUSICAL/LIFE ADVICE YOU’D GIVE TO MY 13 YEAR OLD GUITAR FIEND SON? Play all the time and talk to people that are playing the kind of music you like and get them to turn you onto stuff they listen to so as not to waste you time sorting thru all of the shiite
