American Princes bassist LUKE HUNSICKER recently underwent emergency brain surgery, to remove what turned out to be a benign tumor.   Princes frontman David Slade reports that Luke is doing very well and is resting at home.

The worse news:  huge medical bills on the horizon.  If you’d like to help out wih a donation, please go here

You can also come to the American Princes/Big Cats show tonight at Whitewater Tavern (9 p.m.) to make a donation or buy a limited edition t-shirt.  Proceeds from the shirt sales go toward Luke’s medical bills.

REPORT FROM THE FIELD: Greg Spradlin October 7, 2008

Y’all probably know our friend Greg Spradlin as one of the sickest guitar players ’round these parts.  You’ll find him heading up the Greg Spradlin Outfit, or pounding out cover sets with The Libras, or just working it with a buncha good-timers.  All-around one of the nicest guys in music that you’ll ever meet.

So Greg just had what can only be described as one seriously cool old time with my namesake, the pride of Delight, Arkansas himself.  I’ll let Greg tell you in his own words:

————————————————–

Hey Glen,

How are things going? I hope is well. sorry it’s been awhile since we touched base. You know, you and I have our work cut out for us these days trying to save the world. It’s 24/7, right? 🙂

Hey, just going through my messages and thought I would drop you a line, in case you’re interested about this Glen Campbell tribute I did in Nashville a couple weeks back with my Sin City friends from LA.

The story is this. Every year for the past 5-6 yrs (don’t really recall how long it’s been now), we meet up in Nashville for the Americana Music conference and blow out the last night of the conference events with a party that goes on until, usually, around 3:30-4am. Me and the guys are the house band and we back up whomever shows up. In years past it’s been, Steve Earle, Buddy Miller, Jessi Colter, Don Was, Michelle Shocked, Peter Case, the Bottle Rockets, and the likes. Anyway, it’s a good time and I have been in musical relationships with all of them at one time in my career.

At any rate, this year, Captiol Records hired us and Shilah Morrow (Mama) of Sin City Marketing (she does music PR) and puts on the bash every year to do an all-star tribute to Glen Campbell in support of the new record (yeah, there’s vinyl – and he signed my album!!). So, we did an hour-long tribute early in the evening before our regular hootnanny featuring Jim Lauderdale, Chuck Mead (BR549), Raoul Malo (Mavericks), Jason Ringberg (Jason and the Scorchers), Aaron Beavers (Shurman) and ultimately Glen himself.

It was a great time and an honor to play with Glen for two reasons: a) my grandmother always told me while we watched the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour that one day I would grow up and play and sing just like him; and b) I’m married into the Southwest Arkansas Campbell clan. It was a surreal moment playing Southern Nights with him as his cousins from Campbelltown, AR looked on from the audience.

So, thought I would share that if you were interested. Here are a couple of links to video from the night. The first isn’t great quality, but it shows me on the right side of the stage – which is the side that most of the video that was shot that night was taken from, so I’m not seen much in the other video. The second is the official Sin City feature from the night. If you can overlook some of the cheese, there are some good clips of Glen and others performances in it.

Hope all is well. Give my best to the family and Suzi.

Best.

Suzi Parker on the Little Rock Hip-Hop Scene August 21, 2008

One of CheckOneTwo’s very favorite people is Little Rock journalist/author/troublemaker Suzi Parker.  You may know her from her stories over the years in U.S. News & World Report, The Economist, The Christian Science Monitor, Penthouse…or maybe you’ve read her book Sex in the South…or maybe you’ve used her other book, 1000 Best Bartender’s Recipes.  Maybe you were channel-surfing and saw her talking about swingers on the Dr. Phil Show earlier this year?  Maybe you saw her in this video for The Moving Front?  You could possibly have run into her on the kickball field, where she straight-up represents with the Eco-Savants, or maybe you’re just a guy whose lucky enough to hang with her once in a while (like, say, maybe me).  Basically, it’s her world and we just live in it.

I bring this up not just to give you Suzi’s resume, but to point you to one of the best stories I’ve read in a long time.  For Talk Business Quarterly, Suzi has done a story on the business acumen of Arkansas hip-hop impresarios Epiphany, Rockst*r, and 607.  It’s a great read, and features really beautiful accompanying photos by Dero Sanford.

Check it out at

That’s a full PDF of the magazine–go to page 19 of the PDF, or to page 36 of the magazine.

See more of Dero Sanford’s photos and hear some song samples at this link:

I want to see this event jampacked:  Arkansas Community Arts Cooperative (ACAC) “Stanza Extravaganza” open mic night.  Friday, July 18th, 8:30-11:00.

CheckOneTwo went to one of these at ACAC a while back, and it was an utter blast.  Great funky times for me and the whole crew.  Music, poetry, free-stylin’…the works.  My youngstahs (age 13 and 9) both got up and performed and it was a real cool thing for them.  All ages, and way groovy.

ACAC is just about the coolest thing around.  Please support them.  They do all sorts of really rad events and go out of their way to aim a lot of  ’em at younger folks.  Outside of Vino’s, there really aren’t too many all-ages places around.  Find out more at http://acacarkansas.wordpress.com/

American Princes: 4 Stars in the June issue of UNCUT July 7, 2008

Was perusing an Uncut magazine (terrific British read, up there with Q and Mojo) from last month, and came across a review of our very own American Princes’ new album, Other People (reviewed by CheckOneTwo in this space back in April).  They dug it large.  Check it out: it’s the issue with David Bowie on the front.

AMERICAN PRINCES:  Other People (Yep Roc)

*  *  *  *

Big rock sounds from Little Rock, Arkansas

“American Princes come roaring back from their lair in Little Rock with this howling beast of a disc.  With twin songwriters Collins Kilgore and David Slade battling hammer and tongs for supremacy, the quality control has been ramped up a few notches, as the band extends its range from the poppy chime-and-jangle of “Gravel” to the epic and elegiac “Where i’m Calling From”.  There’s a bit of everything–Smashing Pumpkins, REM, Pixies–but best of all this sounds like a band blossoming into its own identity.”

Congrats, fellas.   If the Brits be with ya, then who can be against ya?

Lawdy…this has been a heapin’ mess-a-goodness.  For one ticket, I can see Silverton, 607, The Moving Front, Kyoto Boom, Epiphany & One Night Stand, Chris Denny & The Old Soles, Kevin Kerby & Battery…and somehow miss Greg Spradlin Outfit, Smoke Up Johnny, and Ted Ludwig just in the name of sheer logistics.   I haven’t hit any of the big acts yet, but I felt the presence of Huey Lewis.

Kudos to Riverfest folks for putting a big ole focus on local music this year.  I’ll post some good pics later on.

ZZ Top and Fireworks later–hoo-ahh!!

TMF Goes 21st Century Sinead on Daybreak May 23, 2008

The Moving Front was on KATV’s Daybreak show this morning, live from the Riverfest setup, from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m.  Yep, the sun rose during a TMF performance.  Very odd watching the fellers rock it out in between the weather forecast and a segment on kids decorating flip-flops, but they managed to get it done.

CheckOneTwo was on the scene whilst you were sleeping.  Those of us who made it out early (er, “both” of us) were treated to pre-dawn versions of “The Equalizer,” “South Side,” “Could be Worse,” “ATTN:  Do Not Duplicate,” and “The Lottery.”

My favorite moment:  when lead singer Jeremy Brasher whipped out a KBR  (Halliburton) logo and tore it up for the camera, Sinead O’Connor style.  My second favorite part:  when the newsies exchanged puzzled looks, shrugged, and kept dancing.

More pics from the early set:

For those of you who stayed in bed until a reasonable hour:  catch TMF tonight at Riverfest, 9:30 p.m., in the Arkansas Music Tent.

Hope to see you out,

Glen
