It’s an exciting time to be in Lotta Rock, with a number of acts teetering somewhere between making it big, making it loud, or just making it for the joy of making it.  Any night in town will find punk house shows on Schiller, metal screamofests at Vino’s, high energy rock at WhiteWater, hip hop at Downtown Music or The Scene…in short, there’s a lot going on musically here.  I’m just happy to be here while it’s going on.

In the movie Almost Famous, Lester Bangs counsels a would-be rock writer to make his reputation by being “honest…and unmerciful.”  I’m no Lester Bangs, but I will call it the way I see it.   This space is designed to review the Little Rock music scene–reviews of albums, my take on shows, and hopefully some insight into what’s going on out there.  I’ll also do my best to keep a good calendar of upcoming shows and events in the Little Rock area.

Your comments and suggestions are welcome, appreciated, and hoped for.  If I rag a band that you love, let me know.  If I love a band you hate, tell me why.  Music is the universal language, but we don’t all hear it the same way.

Glen Hooks wears a lotta hats:  Sierra Club lobbyist, kickball team captain, Daddyo, Perfessor, WonderTwin, active and charter member of MBMM…

You can find Glen in the front row at a show, or maybe hiking through the woods with his sons, or chasing a red ball around the field, or Fighting the Man, or hanging out at Pizza D with the Monday night crew.

You’re less likely to find Glen networking, gettin’ his Young Professional on, or shopping for a new SUV.

But if you do find him, please tell him hello for me….

Welp, it’s time for the ARTimes Best of AR Reader’s Poll. Do we need to rally behind a band/music venue? Even though the best band category is totally rigged, we should call the attention to ________________?

Best Local Music Blog, of course! Ha!

What’s your favorite venue? I like WWT the best except for the crazy smoke. I always have way more of a smoke hangover than any other kind.

Thank you Glen Hooks for what you are doing for this city and it’s music scene. My boyfriend moved here 3 and a half years ago from Austin Tx thinking that his days of being in a band were over. In that time he has seen many hardships but they have all led him to know that Little Rock is quickly becoming a musically diverse place with tons of energy and plenty of talent. I also would like to thank you for giving props to the little people. It is those venues like the Shiller st, the Rad Rad Rad house and the Lazer Puzzy that are fueling this musical revolution in Little Rock. Keep up the good work and I look forward to keeping up with you in the future
