NAME: David Raymond

BAND(S) YOU ARE IN:  Kyoto Boom, Mulehead, Unnamed solo project

PLAY ANY INSTRUMENTS? DO TELL: Guitars, occasionally faking it on a square neck dobro

DESCRIBE YOUR MUSICAL STYLE:  Moist Rock-n-Roll Cake with a creamy Blues filling, Punk Rock icing and topped with Mariachi and Cubano music cherries.

HOW’D YOU GET STARTED PLAYING MUSIC?  I’ve been into music all my life.  I have a picture of being a hairless baby in footie pjs and a plastic Mickey Mouse guitar.  First album was Kiss Alive 2 when it was released.  I was three at the time.  First drum set when I was 5.

FAVORITE LOCAL MUSICIAN BESIDES YOURSELF (AND WHY):  Charles Wyrick.  Far and away the most creative and impromptu player I know.  And a great and hilarious person.  I am happy to know him.  Next time you get a chance, watch and listen to him play closely.  You’ll be amazed.

WHAT’S IN YOUR POCKET RIGHT NOW? a $14 dollar check for a painting I made years ago.

YOUR FAVORITE VENUE IN LITTLE ROCK (AND WHY)?  White Water Tavern.  No pretensions, no egos.  Good management, bands playing at eye level , cheap beer and too loud.

TELL ME ABOUT THE FIRST “REAL” CONCERT YOU EVER ATTENDED.  Kiss w/ the Plasmatics- Creatures of the Night tour (1983?).  My dad took me.  I was ten. Wendy O. Williams came out in a 12″ mohawk and a leather bikini butressed with chains.  We had nose bleed seats and my dad hogged the binoculars to check her out.  The stage looked like a giant tank and the drum riser was the turret which, or course shot fire and explosions.  Lots of fire and fake blood.  Sweet.

HOW ABOUT THE FIRST SHOW YOU EVER DID YOURSELF?  Senior show offs in high school.  Strummed a Dylan song while a friend sang and blew the harmonica.  Lame.

BEST SOURCE FOR MUSICAL INFO? (MAG, WEBSITE, ETC)  Just talking to people and listening to their stuff.

WHAT DOES THIS TOWN NEED? Better promotion at the Ampitheatre.  Its a huge venue that could draw bigger and better names.  It used to, remember when the Pretenders played?  I just saw Tom Petty at Houston’s Woodlands Pavilion, totally packed.  Little Rock can do that too if they try it.  I am so sick of the Three Dog Night, Bachman Turner Overdrive and Foghat shows.  Come on, somebody wake up over there and try a new phone number.

YOUR THREE FAVORITE ALBUMS, ALL-TIME:  I’ve never been able to answer that question.

RE YOUR MUSIC: DOES YOUR MOM LIKE IT OR NOT?  She liked Mulehead, ALOT and she likes my solo stuff.  She hasn’t heard much Kyoto Boom, but I’ll get her on board soon.

FUNNIEST THING THAT’S EVER HAPPENED AT ONE OF YOUR SHOWS:  Springfield Missouri opening for Big Smith.  Ask me, Brent, Geoff or Kevin to tell you about it.  Crazy Funny.

AS A KID, WHAT’D YOU WANT TO GROW UP TO BE?  Still don’t know.  Any suggestions.

MUSICAL/LIFE ADVICE YOU’D GIVE TO MY 13 YEAR OLD GUITAR FIEND SON?  from Guy Piccioto of Fugazi, ” Buy a guitar and immediately join a band.  It’s the best and fastest way to learn.”  Mr T, “Don’t do school, stay in drugs, Fool!”
